After another bruising week in the media following their capitulation against Sydney a week earlier, the Demons came out strongly and held a 14 point lead late in the first quarter before giving Carlton two goals to cut the margin to a point at the first break.
Melbourne's defenders hung on grimly and Jordie McKenzie kept Chris Judd out of the game but with just three more goals for the rest of the match they were eventually overrun by the Blues in the last quarter.
It was the second time the Demons had been in a winning position at three-quarter time and failed to kick a goal in the last quarter that year.
Best were McKenzie, McDonald and Jones.
Jamie Bennell replaced Brad Green at quarter time after Green suffered an injury from a heavy knock. Luke Tapscott was a late replacement for Clint Bartram.
