The two finals contenders who had been displaced from the four the previous week met on King's Birthday Monday and for the second week in a row Melbourne lost a crucial match by just over a goal.
This time instead of making a comeback they were the ones giving up a lead, throwing away a 17 point lead at three quarter time by conceding three goals in time off to allow Footscray to snatch victory.
Rodda, Cordner and McLean were best.
