Melbourne's unbeaten run finally came to an end at Victoria Park as they lost a close game after winning a number of thrillers in the first two months of the season. It was an honourable defeat against a side who had only lost one game themselves, and Melbourne had some excuses through injured players watching from the sidelines.
The visitors got the first goal of the day but it was quickly cancelled out by Collingwood, the two early majors sparking a 10 goal first term with Melbourne booting the last two to take a nine point lead into the second quarter. After such a bright start the Reds failed to kick a goal in the second, but by restricting Collingwood to two of their own the game remained tight.
Quick scoring again featured at the start of the third term, with each side kicking one in the first two minutes, but Collingwood soon opened a 15 point lead. Melbourne then dragged the gap back to two before a late Magpie goal left them nine points up at the last break.
Tymms suffered a knee injury early in the last term and it restricted him severely. Collingwood got another goal to open up a 15 point lead with three minutes played. At the 13 minute mark they'd reduced the gap to six points, and could have equalised had a controversial mark been paid to Dunbar. Collingwood held on to win.
