Returning from an interstate game break, the Redlegs lost Harry Coy to a shoulder injury during the state game. Collingwood was down three of its better players with flu, but still managed to win easily. It was Melbourne's first defeat of the season that wasn't a fighting, competitive defeat.
The match was played in terrible conditions, and the poor weather also contributed to a surprisingly low crowd. By the time the game ended the surface was a mass of muddy water and players emerged covered head to toe in the contents of the ground.
After a tight first quarter the visitors slipped away, but they were cruelled by injury. Percy Wilson was stopped in his tracks by a ball which hit him square in the face while Bert Chadwick suffered an accidental kick, Vern Moore hurt his wrist and all of Dunbar, Lilley and Makin finished the game limping.
Wilson, Chadwick and Makin were Melbourne's best.
The loss dropped Melbourne out of the four for the first time in 1923 and they never returned.
