Melbourne win by 2 goals

The sides met for the third time in 1871, and Melbourne won for the third time. The home side won the toss and opted to kick with a helpful breeze. They got the ball to the Albert Park goal and had several opportunities to score which failed to come off. As well as missed kicks, strong defence by the Parkites helped keep them out. The game reached half time shortly after a collision between a player from each side that left the Albert Park man dazed and bleeding.

Now with their chance to use the breeze, Albert Park were on top at the start of the second half. They only had one good chance, which missed and Melbourne soon had the ball back up their end. Several more opportunities were spurned before Harrison finally scored first goal with a place kick. The visitors lost heart and after several minutes of domination the second goal game.

With the pressure off, Albert Park played their best football of the day and the ball went from end-to-end for the rest of the game.
