Keays' last act in a Melbourne jumper Cook was as one Melbourne's representatives in the 1977 Grand Final Mile race along with Brian Cook. Neither man would play for Melbourne again.

He then moved to Fitzroy for 49 games in four seasons between 1978 and 1981 before joining East Fremantle. Keays returned to Victoria to play for Springvale in 1984, where he remained through 1986.
