The utility was given senior opportunities in his first year at the club, but never found a permanent place in the side across four seasons.
Keays' last act in a Melbourne jumper, was as one Melbourne's representatives in the 1977 Grand Final Mile race along with Brian Cook. Neither man played for Melbourne again. The Demons ignored interest from VFA side Dandenong to swap Keays to Fitzroy, where he played 49 games between 1978 and 1981 before joining East Fremantle. Keays returned to Victoria to play for Springvale in 1984, where he remained through 1986.

Notes
Other sources show him as having worn #51 in 1974 but Football Record shows him having worn #42 from at least his fourth game onwards that year until at least Round 18 when he was wearing #16. Inside Football 18/04/1985 says he was at Subiaco not East Fremantle.
