After being introduced off the bench late in his first game, McMullin was picked to play his first full match against Hawthorn a week later. He was stationed in an unfamiliar back pocket role after playing midfield and forward in the Under 19s and Reserves, and had his jaw broken when struck by an elbow from Leigh Matthews. He returned later in the season for five further games before retiring to concentrate on paediatric surgeon studies.

After his retirement, McMullin played for Old Melburnians in the VAFA. In 2011 he co-founded the OMP Sports Management company and became an accredited player agent. McMullin's cousin Ian trained with the Demons in 1984 before signing with Collingwood.
