With Melbourne desperately hanging on to their slim chances of contending for the top four, they were two games and a significant percentage gap behind fourth placed Collingwood, they needed a win at Glenferrie Oval to stay in touch with the leading pack. Hawthorn had won just two games all year and were amongst three teams a game and percentage below the Demons on the ladder.
When Peter Hudson kicked his side's eighth without reply shortly after the start of the second quarter it looked as if the Hawks were not only going to bridge the points gap but were going to have a significant percentage boosting victory as well. They were 45 points in front but from there it was all Melbourne. The rest of the quarter saw the Demons kick 7.7, including three to rover Rob Dowsing, to a solitary point to take a three point lead into half time.
The margin extended to ten points at the last change before Hassa Mann kicked three last quarter goals to seal the result. After Hudson's goal in the second term Melbourne had outscored their opponents by 18.11 to 4.5
Best were Alves, Mann and Dowsing. Quinn (bruised chest) was replaced by Stewart in the last quarter, K. Osborne was replaced by Vagg in the last quarter.
