The standout leaders of the competition visited the MCG, and while they weren't seriously challenged they didn't have it all their own way against a side who had only won a single match all season. In muddy conditions, Melbourne won in the ruck and through their rovers, but lacked a strong target at full-forward. Countless times they used a pace advantage for their small men to drive the ball forward only for it to be turned back. If nothing else it showed that they were a better side than they had showed in the first two months of the season.

Geelong led by eight points at half time, and three goals at the last change. Melbourne got the first goal of the last quarter through Cordner, but Geelong steadied and held on to win. Fans became frustrated, and at one point started chanting "we want Clarke", calling for Noel Clarke to be moved forward again. John Beckwith went to full back after Geelong full-forward Goninon kicked three quick goals and held him goalless for the rest of the game.

Best were Arnold, McGivern and Spencer. Beckwith and Morrow suffered thigh injuries.
