In a season affected by an unusual number of rainy Saturday afternoons, Melbourne won their first VFL premiership despite finishing sixth of eight teams on the ladder. They topped their selectional rounds group on percentage, courtesy of a big win over St Kilda. In Round 1, St Kilda registered their first VFL win after three full seasons, with the original result of a draw was overturned on appeal. They made the Grand Final after beating Essendon in a thrilling Semi Final, then upset a Fitzroy side which won five games more than them in the home and away season.

Controversy over Melbourne's unlikely premiership, their first success at any level since 1876, led to the adoption of a new final four system in 1901. The Fuschias waited another 25 years for their second VFL flag.

The Round 14 game against Carlton was originally scheduled to be played as Round 3 but was postponed until the end of the Home and Away season.
