Melbourne returned to their home turf after losing to the unbeaten Magpies a week earlier, but after conceding their spot in the top four on the previous Saturday they lost further ground on the leaders with a disappointing loss to fellow top four side Carlton.

In windy, cold conditions with rain falling throughout the day the Blues jumped out to a solid advantage at quarter time, which Melbourne could only cut a point off in the second quarter. Carlton were steadier under pressure, displaying better judgement, quicker to the ball and making the best of their opportunities. Most of Melbourne's attacks were being set up through middle of the ground and were breaking down badly.

Heavy rain set in at half time, and when the Fuschias failed to score in the third the Blues had a match winning lead of almost nine goals. A belated comeback in the last term as darkness came over the ground made the margin more respectable, but the result spelled trouble for Melbourne's chances of making the top four.

Usher, Murray and Green were best.

It was Melbourne's lowest score against Carlton since 1920, and it dropped them to sixth on the ladder, a game and a half outside the four.
