Melbourne took a poor record to Victoria Park, having won just four games there since 1897, none since 1921, and the unbeaten Magpies enjoyed another easy win against them.
The visitors had to absorb two attacks in the early minutes, both marked by Tymms in defence, before having the best of the opening exchanges. They were held out by Collingwood's defence and once the Magpies settled and kicked their first goal seven minutes into the first quarter they were too good. Melbourne tried hard and weren't disgraced, but Collingwood's dominance in the air was one of the key factors which helped them to a four goal lead in the first quarter before Melbourne got a late consolation.
The Magpies continued to dominate early in the second, and a 34 point lead at half time all but won them the game, but Melbourne's third quarter was its best. For the first time all day they rectified some of the skill issues which had been plaguing them, altered some positions and played cohesive football, beating their opponents in a four goal to one term which left a 16 point gap at three quarter time.
Any hope of a comeback was out the window in the first minute of the last quarter when Collingwood kicked the first goal.
Hopes remained of being the first to conquer the Magpies for the season, but the issue was not in doubt for long. Within a minute Collingwood had kicked the first goal of the term and they had too much class, kicking away to their first ever seven consecutive win start to the year.
Melbourne's cause was not helped by finishing with four places suffering from some kind of incapacitation. Wittman suffered an injury from an accidental kick which meant he ended the game with bandages on both hands. Tymms (thigh and knee), Esposito (bruised thigh and kicked ankle) and Barnes (knock to the leg) were all hurt.
Tymms, Warne-Smith and Haw were Melbourne's best.
The loss dropped Melbourne to fifth, half a game behind fourth-placed Essendon.
