Coming off a disappointing loss to Fremantle , Melbourne was again at home against an interstate side.
Before the match, a pink "Field of Women" event was held on the MCG. 11,500 pink silhouettes on the ground represented the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia every year. Players trained during the week in pink and ran onto the ground in pink tops, holding pink Sherrins as a mark of support for the cause.
The Crows had the run of play all night, but could never shake Melbourne off. When Simon Godfrey goalled from a free-kick after the three quarter time siren, the home side had the lead.
Three goals in the first ten minutes of the last quarter put the Demonsin the box seat, the Crows hit back to keep the match in the balance. Adelaide, however, only had themselves to blame due to their abysmal kicking for goal.
Brad Miller was reported for the fourth time of the year, but was finally rubbed out for two matches after pleading guilty to front-on high contact with Crow Ken McGregor.
