Any concerns that Melbourne's excellent early season form was a flash in the pan were dismissed by their dominant victory over the Maroons - a fellow finals contender.
Melbourne's players showed greater dash, better system and won handsomely in the air. They were quicker to the ball, and their passing was excellent both by hand and foot. On the other hand Fitzroy were one step behind all the way and only had a brief patch in the third quarter when they were competitive.
Despite their dominance Melbourne only managed three goals in the first quarter due to their forwards missing several opportunities. Davidson was the chief offender with two easy snap shots missed before Warne-Smith got the first goal, and two more gave them a 14 point lead at the first break.
Their superiority was more pronounced in the second quarter, scoring four goals to a solitary point. They started the attack in the first minute and didn't let up through the quarter. Fitzroy livened up briefly at the end of the quarter but were unable to get past Coy and Thomas in Melbourne's defence.
Late in the second quarter the Reds lost Taylor after receiving a blow from an elbow above the heart and played one man short for most of the third quarter but it didn't have a great effect on the match. For a time Fitzroy were on top before Wittman scored a steadier. It coincided with Taylor reappearing and moving to the forward line for the rest of the game. He set up a goal almost immediately.
The match was over at three quarter time before Fitzroy won some respectability in the last quarter. The Football Record reported that "never before has such cheering and applause come from the members' reserve, nor has such enthusiasm been displayed by their usually stoic supporters".
Best were Thomas, Coy and Chadwick. Taylor suffered a heavy knock.
