Essendon had won five games in a row, but with the Demons still an outside chance of making the top six they kept their hopes alive with a comfortable win. The Demons only had one multiple goalkicker, but Allen Jakovich was irresistible with 8.6. At the other end Bomber spearhead Paul Salmon disappointed, and was taken from the ground during the third quarter. Essendon were the second highest scoring side in the league but were blanked by the Demon defence.
The Demons led by seven at half time before Jakovich kicked five of his goals in the second half. Essendon got within four points early in the last term before Melbourne kicked five in a row.
Neil Balme called it "the game of the year for us"
Best were G. Lovett, Jakovich and Viney. Darren Kowal was concussed when struck by Bradley Plain, who was subsequently reported.
