After two poor performances Melbourne looked like they had turned the corner early against Essendon. They had two goals on the board early in the game, beating their entire tally from two days earlier by the midway point of the first term.
When the visitors lost a player with a broken ankle during the second quarter the Redlegs took advantage to pile on four straight goals to take them to seven straight, and a two point half time lead. Three quick goals at the start of the third gave them another handy break, as Essendon played the better football but couldn't turn their chances into scores.
The margin was 10 points at the last change before Essendon launched a stirring comeback to snatch the lead and the game.
Best were Strong, Coutie and Monk.
