Played a single game for the Blues in each of 1906 and 1907 before joining Melbourne. He played eight games in 1908 before another one game season the year after.

Crossed to North Melbourne in mid-1909, and remained there until early 1910. Reappeared in the VFA with Hawthorn in 1914.

Bickford boundary umpired one VFL game in 1921, and later appeared in 120 matches as a field umpire in country victory.

His nephew George Bickford later played in a premiership for the club and his brother Edric played for both Carlton and Essendon.
