Melbourne's 2000th VFL/AFL game came against the league's most recent additions, and on the day Shane Woewodin played his 100th consecutive matches since debut, the Demons won easily to drop Fremantle to 0-6. The Dockers led early but wasted both chances in front of goal, and their opportunity to play against a Melbourne side missing late withdrawal Jeff White (knee injury) and hamstring victim Jeff Farmer.
Fremantle led by 24 points early in the third term, and looked like ending their winless start to the season. Despite the rain coming down heavily the Demons kicked five of the last six goals of the quarter to go in slightly at the last change Then, with the game on the line Fremantle fell to pieces and conceded eight goals. Alistair Nicholson, thrown into the ruck in the absence of White and Troy Simmonds dominated the centre, and when Fremantle lost Koops, Bandy, Modra and Bell to injury during the last quarter they managed just three behinds.
Neale Daniher admitted his side was outplayed for three quarters, saying he thought the Dockers "should have been a lot further in front".
Daniel Ward, Adem Yze and Anthony McDonald were Melbourne's best. White was replaced in the selected side by Ben Beams. Andrew Leoncelli injured his shoulder.
