A sixth win in a row saw the Reds at the top of the table, but for the third year in a row against St Kilda they were made to work hard for victory. It took until the final quarter of a high standard game for Melbourne to break away, and even when they did it was only to the tune of two goals.

Superiority in the air was the telling factor in a fast, open and skilful contest where scores were level several times throughout the afternoon - including with 10 minutes to play. St Kilda were tired but hung on until the finish. Poor forward play had cost them dearly during the third quarter, and two more chances were missed in the last when Melbourne were less than a goal in front.

Johnson was Melbourne's best, playing both forward and back as well as stints in the ruck he booted five goals. Warne-Smith and Dunbar were also amongst the best. Abernethy suffered an ankle injury and Taylor was in shock from two falls.
