The defending premiers got just their second victory of the season, narrowly coming out on top in an even game despite the absence of C. Gardiner, Sowden, Ryan, Langley and Adams.
Carlton played better as a team, but they were lighter than their opponents and eventually bulk won out. The game was won in a five minute period during the third quarter when Melbourne booted three goals.
Best were McGinis, Moodie and Colclough.
