June 1894 Match vs Port Melbourne

Saturday 9 June - Port Melbourne Cricket Ground

Port Melbourne 0.0, 1.0, 2.0, 2.1
Melbourne 1.4, 3.5, 3.6, 4.9

Melbourne win by 2 goals

Goalkickers: Smith 2, McGinis 1, Christy 1

Melbourne were unable to field anything near their preferred starting 20, with Patrick O'Dea, Dick Wardill, Fred Sheahan and Gerald Sheahan all unavailable. Christy and Moysey had to play at reduced fitness and were pressed into positions on the ground where they were not at their best.

Nevertheless the Reds were too good for their hosts in what turned out to be an often spiteful game. Melbourne were the better side in the first half, and their defence were holding out Port whenever they went forward.

During the third quarter Port did their best attacking of the day, before Melbourne restricted them to a single behind in the last term.

Fry, McGinis and Moore were best.
