John James Graham Colclough was a Scotch College 1st XVIII player from 1899 to 1901, including premierships in his last two seasons. He played VFL football on the weekends in 1901 and had to miss one game because he was studying for an exam on the Monday.
Forced to move to the country to work on his family's farm he was cleared to Ballarat in 1902, playing there until 1907, then again in 1912. During his time at Ballarat he rejected an offer to join Geelong.
In 1915 Colclough enlisted in the Army's 58th Battalion and served in World War I. He was gassed several times during the conflict and was awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal for his service.
