Footscray had still never done any better than a draw against the Redlegs, and continued their run of outs with another loss.
Melbourne failed to impress, but despite the close scores the Tricolours never came close to winning. If Melbourne's forward play hadn't been so atrocious they would have won by a larger margin.
The test came in the third quarter when Melbourne were defending a nine point lead kicking into the wind, but as the game saw a number of skirmishes develop they withstood the attack and increased their lead, giving them a comfortable 14 lead going into the last term.
Johnson, Usher and Pemberton were best. Stan Wittman was reported for striking but found not guilty.
Melbourne's win took them to second on the ladder, a game and percentage behind Richmond.
