Melbourne registered their fifth win in a row, but were challenged all the way but one of the worst sides in the competition. It was only the second time Hawthorn had scored 100 points since joining the league.
In a high-scoring match the Mayblooms took the lead shortly after half time, causing some worry for the Redlegs, and as the visitors failed to put their best performance forward it kept Hawthorn in the game. Melbourne's experience won out in the end, leaving them on their own at the top of the ladder.
Best were Taylor, Dunbar and Wittman. Jimmy Davidson had cussion, Chadwick's leg was hurt by a kick and Corbett had a cut cheek.
