With their season already jeopardised by two losses in the opening three games, Melbourne went into their match against the 2-1 Tigers as the underdogs - and trailed at the first three changes before storming home to win a thriller.

After Richmond had opened the game with six goals and a 19 point lead at quarter time, they had only forfeited a few points from the lead through the day and still led by 15 at the last break.

Melbourne came strongly in the final term and managed to sneak a win by just under a goal to keep them in touch with the top four.

Bickford, Dockett and Arnold were best.

Geoff Collins saw his debut ruined by an injury which kept him out of the game for eight weeks.
