Their third thriller in a row saw the Redlegs go 2-1 up with a second victory for the year. Melbourne had been disappointing on the previous Saturday, while Geelong had won brilliantly, so they were expected to challenge strongly on the MCG but they were as sluggish as the home side in the early going.

After a poor opening to the game, Melbourne had a one point lead at quarter time. The Pivotonians had a height and weight advantage, and took a 15 point lead into the second half. They got the first goal of the third quarter, before Melbourne struck back to slice the a margin to a point at the last change. The lead fluctuated between the sides in the last quarter, and Geelong took a two point lead at the start of time on with a long goal from 60 yards.

In the last seconds George Margitich soccered the ball through from 30 yards out. The bell rang almost immediately after the ball had gone through. Margitich had kicked badly all day despite his four goals, but he saved his best for the last act of the match.

Best for Melbourne were Tymms, Vine and Johnson. Murray and Steel injured ankles.
