The result of an earlier game meant Melbourne ran onto the SCG knowing they would be playing a Qualifying Final at the MCG against Collingwood in the first week of finals. They warmed up for September with a hard-fought win against the Swans, who had already made the finals. Melbourne had to come from behind to win, before running away with the game in the last quarter. They survived an injury scare to Bayley Fritsch, who hurt his foot again on return from the injury that had kept him out for several weeks, but Jake Melksham suffered a season ending knee injury.
Best were Petracca, Fritsch and Viney. Bailey Laurie replaced the injured Jake Melksham in the third quarter. In addition to the Fritsch and Melksham injuries, Jake Bowey had treatment on his shoulder.
