With a scheduling kink the only the way the Demons played in September 1972 they took on the Lions on a day Fitzroy farewelled Kevin Murray - for the first time - and spoiled Murray's party with a comfortable five goal win.
Even with their already weakened ruck further damaged by the loss of Peter Keenan and John Clennett (late withdrawal) with injury they were still too good for the visitors.
After a close first quarter the Demons took the ascendancy in the second and never looked back. Murray took a lap of honour around the ground at the end of the day but with both sides missing out on finals it was Ian Ridley who looked toward 1973 with more positivity, naming Greg Wells, Greg Parke and Ross Brewer as important players for the next year.
Best were Wells, Alves and Davis
