Having thrown away their chance at playing in the finals a week before with an upset loss against Fitzroy, the demoralised Demons played the even more lowly Geelong for pride at the MCG. The tiny crowd on offer reflected the general level of depression amongst both sets of fans.
Stuck on four goals at three-quarter time it was only when Ray Biffin went forward that they looked any chance of winning. 29 points down at the last break Biffin kicked two early goals before Ray Smith drifted forward and booted a goal during time on to cut the margin back to one straight kick. A few more minutes might have seen them win but the Cats were saved by the siren.
A dejected Bob Skilton sad "There can be no excuses" and described his forward line performance as a disgrace.
Best were Alves, Fowler and Hardeman. Keenan (strained back) was replaced by Brewer in the third quarter, and Coles was replaced by Sparks at three quarter time.
