With their finals hopes hanging by a thread, Richmond got off to a fast start with three of the first four goals. They led by 11 at quarter time, and by 20 midway through the second quarter before late goals by Alex Neal-Bullen and Christian Petracca cut the lead to eight points at the long break. Two quick goals at the start of the third term restored the margin, before Melbourne kicked the last four goals of the quarter to lead at the last change.

Richmond got the first two goals of the final term, before they were swept away by the last six majors of the game without scoring again. Harrison Petty kicked his fifth and sixth goals, doubling his previous career best.

Best were Petty, Gawn and Viney. Joel Smith replaced Adam Tomlinson in the third quarter.
