The Demons set up their second consecutive win to open the year with a five goal to one first quarter, and held the Blues to just seven behinds across the middle quarters - taking a 10 goal lead into the last quarter.

Carlton recovered with a belated effort in the last quarter which saved them from a thrashing, but they were never in the game due to fumbling easy marks, failing to handle the ball cleanly in the conditions and kicking poorly.

Despite the margin the defending premiers never really impressed, and were guilty of too much short passing in the forward line considering the wet conditions.

Best were Barassi, Melville and Beckwith. During the game Ridley was replaced by Bull and T. Johnson by Wilson.

Norm Smith said "Melbourne was really the better team in every phase of the game. Carlton literally gave us many opportunities by pestisting with short passing and misdireted handball in defence. It was not a bad performance on our part, but I expect the team to do better."
