After a hard fought loss to Essendon in their opening match of the season, the Demons needed to rebound quickly and they did, but not without a fight. This time they were forced to do it without Fred Fanning, who'd kicked 18 goals in the game against St Kilda at the end of 1947.
In a low scoring contest the two sides were only separated at half time by Melbourne's poor kicking on goal which saw them just six behinds in front despite having had 10 scoring shots to four. Conditions were poor but Melbourne's superior stamina helped them overhaul the Saints in the end.
St Kilda got out to a three goal lead midway through the third quarter, but late goals by Melbourne left them a point in front going into the final term. From there it was all Red and Blue as the visitors ignited and slammed on six goals to one in the quaqmire conditions in a comfortable victory to kick start their season.
Best were Bickford, Dockett and Rodda. 19th and 20th men were Spittle and Bowman.
