On form Richmond should have smashed the Demons, but the fighting spirit of Melbourne was epitomised by Robert Flower who played despite suffering a violent stomach upset before the match. His side had more scoring shots, and trailed by less than a goal at the 28 minute mark of the last quarter but were unable to break through.

Kevin Bartlett booted the first goal of the game after 18 seconds and it seemed the Tigers were about to steamroll their inexperienced opponents, but by the first break they had only come out four points better in a nine goal quarter. Barassi and Jackson found time to have one of their many stoushes at the huddle and after the coach berated Jacko for giving away free kicks the forward threw his boots to the ground and walked off. He kicked 2.3 for the day but gave away five frees.

Despite a spirited Demon performance Richmond were simply a better side. Five goals up deep into the third quarter it looked like a walkout but once again Melbourne fought back and a Flower goal deep into the last quarter levelled the scores. It was to no avail, the Tigers won. A goal on the siren extended the margin to 10.

Peter Tossol goalled with his first two kicks in league football during the third quarter. To that point he was the only Demon in history ever to achieve that feat.

Best were Peter Keenan, Gerard Healy and Brian Wilson. Peter Giles suffered a knee injury.
