Melbourne started strongly, aided by a lucky goal during the first quarter, and had the only three goals of the opening quarter. They put a fourth on the board immediately after the restart, but after a light shower fell midway through the second quarter the visitors came to their senses and outplayed the Reds on all fronts.

The home side failed to score another goal from that point on, and Fitzroy would have won more comfortably had they kicked more accurately.

Best were Gardiner, Purse and Bremner.
