In a battle of teams playing for a place in the finals, the Dogs jumped to a 20 point lead by the 14 minute mark of the first quarter. Melbourne recovered to be in front midway through the second quarter before the home side retook a 14 point lead at the half.

The margin was four points at the last change, and remained close until midway through the term when the Dogs kicked away.

Neil Balme publicly questioned the umpiring, which saw the Dogs win the free kick count 28-15. "When you are in a tight situation and you've got to win the game and you can't get a run from the umpires it makes it much more difficult" he said.

Defeat left the Demons a game and percentage ahead of Collingwood, likely only needing one win from their last three to make the finals.

Best were G. Lovett, Stynes and Hopgood. Matthew Febey (calf) was replaced in the selected side by Andrew Lamprill. Todd Viney broke his arm, ending his season.
