After a cagey first half, Melbourne shot away with the last four goals of the third quarter to take a 23 point lead into the last change. Tom McDonald kicked a goal two minutes into the last term to extend the gap to 29, before Geelong stormed back into the game. They drew to within two points near the end of the quarter, and after a rushed behind in the last minute transitioned from one end of the ground to other where defender Zac Tuohy marked on the siren. He kicked truly to win the game.
Best were Oliver, Harmes and Fritsch.
