With their finals spot wrapped up, the Demons went into the last game of the season playing for the double chance. They needed to beat the fourth placed Carlton, and hope that second placed Geelong were beaten. They did their bit, but the Cats were untroubled, thumping lowly Fitzroy by 78 points at Brunswick Street. Melbourne had little faith in the Lions, Ron Barassi was rested to freshen him up for the finals after several weeks troubled by a groin strain. They were also without Tassie Johnson (fractured cheekbone), Ray Dawson, and Terry Gleeson (flu).

Any suspicion that the game would be a hands-off exhibition was ended early when the sides put on a fierce start to the game. Carlton were better than the final margin, but handicapped themselves with indirect kicking into the forward line, poor disposal and kicking for goal.

The fire went out of the game after half time, with only five more goals kicked.

Winning without Barassi was an important psychological blow before playing the Blues again a week later in the finals.

Best were H. Mann, Roet and Rowarth. Townsend and Jones were reserves. Lord injured his wrist.
