Having handed second place to Richmond after suffering a one point loss to St Kilda, Melbourne were forced to wait through an enforced bye for an interstate game to find out if they'd get to play fourth placed Carlton or top of the table Collingwood in the semi final.
They did their part by thumping North, but Richmond's eight goal win in Geelong meant the Tigers held on to second place on percentage and forced Melbourne into a knock-out semi final against Collingwood.
It was Melbourne's highest score of the year. Johnson, Wittman and McConvillle were best. Dunbar injured his knee playing in his first match for six weeks, but it was only a scare as he was able to line up against Collingwood the next week. His absence in the second half had no affect on Melbourne as they ran away with a big win.
