Other than a well-patronised members' reserve the crowd at Princes Park to see Melbourne play their last game of the year was small. The view was held that Carlton would do better to prepare themselves for the upcoming finals and they gave several of their players spells. Melbourne nearly took advantage with almost their strongest possible side but fell narrowly short.

Going into the third quarter 14 points behind Melbourne improved their play and kicked the first two goals of the term to get within a straight kick before Carlton managed to hit back. A minute after the bounce of the last quarter scores were level, then Melbourne hit the lead through Tomkins. The play was even for several minutes from then until Carlton kicked two goals in a row to retake the lead. The visitors ran out of time and conceded the sealing goal in the last seconds.

Best were Tomkins, McKenzie, and Odgers.
