After a surprise loss in Cairns four days earlier, the Demons backed up for another winnable team against a side lower than them on the ladder. They failed again, this time in the rain, leaving their finals hopes in tatters.
Conditions affected both sides, kicking a combined 2.12 in the first half, before Freo's three goal to one third quarter gave them a 17 point lead at the last change. Melbourne got no closer than eight points during the last quarter. They were now left needing to win both their remaining games and hope other results went their way.
Best were Viney, Gawn and Petracca. Kysaiah Pickett was fined $1500 for a dangerous tackle.
