The Demons ended their disappointing, war hit premiership defence with a strong but ultimately futile performance against South.
Melbourne led at quarter time, and still led at half time but South had managed twice as many scoring shots, and when they kicked seven goals to three in the third quarter they took the advantage. Their opponents staged a comeback in the last quarter but they weren't able to get their nose in front, and South kicked two goals in late driving rain to win the day.
