The son of a Swedish immigrant, "Snowy" Helmer debuted with Geelong in 1937 after the Pivotonians were tipped off to his talents by cousin Fred Hawking. A forward renowned for his ability to kick a torpedo on either foot, Helmer debuted in kicked 74 goals from centre-half forward in his second season. In 1941 he played for Victoria against South Australia.

Enlisting in the army, Helmer was unable to play for Geelong who had entered recess and so when on leave from a bomb disposal course he lined up for two matches with the Demons. In 1944 he played with South Sydney, and was later killed in New Guinea when trying to defuse a bomb.

From 1947 a Clyde Helmer Trophy was awarded for most consistent player at Geelong. The Mooroopna best and fairest is named after him.
