Two losses in a row had all but ended Melbourne's finals hopes and when they went into the quarter time huddle at Moorabbin nearly six goals down their year was finished. The rot was highlighted by Saint's defender Neil Besanko running 70 yards to kick the last goal of the first term.
Injuries had hit the Demons hard, and on a wet day they doubled their goalkicking tally when the sting had gone out of the game in the last term. The lack of rucks, rovers and a forward line saw them outclassed.
Best were Alves, Fowler and Keays. Flower was replaced by Delmenico in the third quarter, after being felled by 35 metres behind the play by Robert Muir and cracking his jaw, and Coles by Chamberlain in the last quarter.
