Holding nothing more than a mathematical chance of making the top four, the Demons further harmed their chances of a finals appearance with a comfortable loss to the Magpies. They had the best of the early play but could only register two behinds before Collingwood broke clear for the opener. This provoked Melbourne's best patch of the day, replying with three quick goals, before momentum swung back to the visitors at the end of the term, leaving a three point margin at quarter time.

Melbourne was unable to keep their form up in the second quarter, wasting a number of chances with poor short passing into the forward line, while the Pies kicked the only three goals. Two more immediately after half time left them in a commanding position, before a late rally cut the margin to 13 points at the last change. The game didn't remain in the balance for long, with two quick goals after the resumption sealing victory for the Pies.

Best were Latham, Cordner and Smith. Hughes was an unused 19th man.
