After four wins in their previous five games Melbourne were hitting form at the right time of the season, but too late to make a serious bid at a spot in the finals. They did enough to keep their hopes alive when challenged by the Mayblooms, holding on to their three quarter time lead to win.
On a muddy ground, with ankle deep slush, Melbourne held sway for most of the day. Hawthorn had a bright start but couldn't capitalise on the scoreboard, and once the Demons realised that kicking the ball off the heavy ground was more advantageous than trying to retain possession they took the lead at the first break. Hawthorn struck back in the second quarter with six goals but conceded four at the other end. A goal on the siren helped cut the gap to six points at the half.
The match was made safe early in the third quarter with two quick goals, and with dominance in the ruck they opened a 21 point lead. Hawthorn continued to work hard but were ultimately too far behind to seriously challenge.
The win saw Melbourne enter the week's break for an interstate game still two wins and more than 20% behind fourth placed Richmond. They faced the Tigers the next week, where only a win could keep them in the hunt to miraculously slip into the finals.
Best were Glass, Bennett and Deague. Beames (injured leg) was replaced in the selected side by Libbis. 19th man Foster was not used. Les Jones injured his thumb.
