In wet and gusty conditions, the Zebras repeated their three goal win over Geelong in the Qualifying Final, holding off the fast finishing Cats to win their third consecutive premiership.

Sandringham looked home at 35 points in front during the last quarter, but with the aid of a strong breeze Geelong booted five goals in 10 minutes to cut the margin to less than a kick. Sandringham was saved by defender Andy Biddlecombe, who kicked two goals in the last five minutes. His second came from 40 metres out, hard on the boundary, into the wind.

Best were Phil Read, who won the Norm Goss Medal for best on ground, Shannon Motlop and Gallagher.
