Geelong win by 61 points
After three straight losses put them on the verge of falling out of the top four the Demons travelled to Kardinia Park and were thrashed comfortably by a Geelong side who were hot on their heels in the race for a finals berth.
The first quarter was even, with Melbourne winning in the air and the ruck, but they only managed three more behinds with the wind. In the second quarter the locals took over, holding Melbourne and their malfunctioning forward line goalless while they built up a lead of over five goals.
On one goal at half time Melbourne had the wind and a chance to get back into the game, but any opportunity for a comeback was destroyed when they only managed 1.7 with their scoring shots while allowing the home side to boot four goals. They were 43 points up at the last change.
Three Melbourne goals in the last term made their final score respectable, but Geelong added six of their own to run away with a comfortable victory which dropped Melbourne to sixth and desperately needing wins to stay in the hunt for the finals.
Best were Jackson, Mitchell and Ted Cordner. Bowman replaced Hanna at half time. W. Scanlan was an unused 20th man.
