Brother of Charlie Newman, who had played 15 times for Melbourne between 1943 and 1945, Dave played for Collingwood in Round 5, 1947 but by Round 8 was in the Demon side. He was the brother-in-law of Richie Emselle, who suggested he transfer to Melbourne.
Newman played four games as a half-forward flank. He joined Tongala as playing coach in 1948, taking them to a premiership the next year. He remained with the club as a player through 1955.
