The fourth and fifth placed teams in the league took to the field in a match which would either put Melbourne back inside the finals race or leave them a game out of it. The story of their 1922 season continued with another thrilling game, and this time they came out on the right side of the scoreboard. In the air the Blues were the better side, with Melbourne's players beaten to many marks. Fortunately for the home team Carlton's forward play was also poor throughout the day and they spurned many chances.
Melbourne had few chances but made the best of them. Harry Harker got the first goal from a place kick, and Jack House got the second before ex-Redleg Alec Farrow gave Carlton the lead at the first break with his side's third goal.
Carlton continued to press at the start of the second quarter, but Melbourne's strong defence kept the Blues at bay and gave their forwards the chance to score goals.
Opening up a lead at three quarter time with their pacy, skillful play the Redlegs ran out of petrol in the last term and only avoided defeat because of Carlton's poor kicking for goal. After the Blues got within a goal it took a Jack House goal to restore a comfortable margin. Carlton got another one late to keep it interesting but missed a chance and were unable to break through for the goal that would have given them the win.
The win gave Melbourne a one game lead over the Blues in the race for the four, but Carlton still carried a superior percentage. The Blues later complained to the VFL umpiring committee about a decision not to play a goal, arguing that Coy had marked 18 inches behind the goal. Their complaint was dismissed.
Best were Haines, Lilley and Allan.
