The Demons built on a strong first quarter to get ahead of the ledger and extend their record to 3-2 for the season in a match against their nearest neighbours. Against a Richmond side who had suffered major issues with flu during the week Melbourne opened up a 26 point lead with the wind late in the quarter, before the Tigers kicked a late goal.

The visitors cut the gap back to 13 at the long break, and it was still only 16 at the final change thanks to three straight goals. Richmond had many attacks throughout the day but their attacking power was too weak to capitalise, and a three goal to one final term delivered the win.

McMahen, Williams and Beckwith were best. Carroll replaced McMahen in the last quarter.
